Student Choice

Providing students choices in the classroom is another way to increase engagement. Instead of simply presenting information, when it’s possible, I like to ask students for their input on lesson topics. I may even just give them a choice between two upcoming topics for which to cover first. When they have a say, they are more likely to engage positively in the lessons.

It is also a great tool for differentiation. Whether I’m trying to reach students with different learning styles, EL’s or students with IEPs or 504s, providing choices allows students to take ownership and show off their very best.

They also provide opportunities for differentiation when assessing students.

Choice boards are my go to resource for early finishers. This gives students enjoyable activities that they choose but that are still academic focused.
